B – Sarah Kay

by krstaten

For my first post, instead of sharing my own poetry, I’d like to link the video that got me interested in spoken word: Sarah Kay’s TED talk, which starts with her poem “B,” also frequently referred to by its first line, “If I Should Have a Daughter:”

What I love most about Sarah Kay is that she has a writing style that is both layered and accessible; she doesn’t lack depth or room for interpretation, but one does not need to be an expert in poetry to understand the emotions and complexities that she conveys. What’s more, her performance often lacks the intensity of many other spoken word/slam poets I’ve seen, but her delivery is still moving for the audience.
